The former Mary Jane Hayes competed in the Miss America Pageant as Miss District of Columbia in 1949.  Five years later she was under contract to Universal Studios, beginning a long career in films and television.

Today she is probably best remembered for horror, SF, and other B movies; her credits include Roger Corman’s The Undead, Zombies of Mora Tau, The Unearthly, The Disembodied, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, The Hypnotic Eye, and The Crawling Hand.

Exceptionally striking, and with great screen presence, after the 50’s Hayes acted less in films and more in television as her health deteriorated. She was diagnosed with lead poisoning from a doctor’s calcium supplements, and died in 1977 from leukemia.
