Moira Shearer, Lady Kennedy, was born Moira Shearer King in 1926 in Scotland. Her father was an actor, Harold V. King. She began her dance training when her family moved to Northern in 1931, and continued her studies in the UK. By 1942 she was in the Sadler’s Wells Ballet. Her first film is her best known, Powell and Pressburger’s The Red Shoes. She also appeared in their next film, The Tales of Hoffmann. But it’s her third film for director Michael Powell that warrants her incusion here, 1960’s Peeping Tom. Far ahead of its time, Peeping Tom so shocked the public that it effectively ruined Powell’s career. Shearer, co-stars Karl Bohm and Anna Massey were all effective in the creepy, sleazy, yet touching picture. Moira married journalist and broadcaster Sir Ludovic Kennedy in 1950, and they had a son and three daughters. She died in 2006.
