#88 Geena Davis

9 01 2011

In Beetlejuice!

Virginia Elizabeth “Geena” Davis made her film debut in Tootsie (1982).  Three years later she was in some films that warrant her mention here, Transylvania 6-500, The Fly, Beetlejuice, and Earth Girls Are Easy. In 1988 she won an Academy Award for The Accidental Tourist, and had written as well as performed in many television shows.  A Mensa member and Olympic semifinalist in archery, she now tends to play more professional role models than the flaky or sexy cuties of the 80’s.  Geena does very serious work in the area of gender equality and gender studies.  Among her many achievements is the largest research project ever undertaken on gender in children’s entertainment.
