Kathleen Doyle Bates was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, then moved to New York to begin a stage career. On Broadway she played many roles taken by prettier, more svelte actresses when produced for the screen. Her breakout character was Annie Wilkes in the film of Stephen King’s Misery, which earned her an Oscar for Best Actress. She is also a director, mostly in television (Homicide, NYPD Blue, Oz, Everwood, Six Feet Under). Other credits include My Best Friend Is A Vampire, High Stakes, The Stand, Dolores Claiborne (which doesn’t belong here but gets mention because she’s awesome), Diabolique, Dragonfly, and The Day the Earth Stood Still.
