#107 Mercedes McCambridge

11 01 2011

Born in Joliet Illinois in 1916, Carlotta Mercedes Agnes McCambridge was a brilliant radio and motion picture actress who won an Oscar in her first movie, All the King’s Men.  She is included here because she was the demon’s voice in The Exorcist, dubbed for Linda Blair, a performance which still has the power to shock over thirty years on.  She had to sue the studio for credit, and it remains her most recognized work. Though she doesn’t have a lot of scream creds, if you’re exclusively a genre fan and so haven’t seen Johnny Guitar, Touch of Evil and Giant, they are classics that appeal to fans who love bold, dynamic characters.  Also see The Scarf, 99 Women, and Marquis de Sade: Justine.
